He's smarter than we are!

On Monday, April 20th, we tried to breed William & Cheddar for the first time. This breeding wasn't supposed to happen until the fall, but sadly we had to do an emergency spay on Marti and lost the chance for Chum x Marti pups.

Since I'd been out of town when Pekoe came into season and we weren't planning to breed her this time, Paul didn't really pay attention to what day she started. So Monday seemed to be about the right time and she was starting to flag and flirt. Both William and Cheddar were quite vocal so it seemed time to try for a breeding. Not!

While Pekoe did her best to entice William, he was not interested in anything more than a casual inspection. Great...now we're off to one of the reproductive vets since he's a young, inexperience stud. Maybe he just doesn't know what's expected....

So, Tuesday rather than driving 45 minutes to Dr McBride (one of the reproductive vets), we go to the Dr. Jan (the regular vet) and do a progesterone test. Low and behold, when it comes back Wednesday morning, Pekoe's progesterone level is only at 2.6 ng (breeding typically is done 2 days after they reach 5 ng). Well, Pekoe - You're a slut! and Wiiliam - YOU'RE SMARTER THAN WE ARE.

Believing that she'll hit that 5 ng level on Wednesday, we wait until Thursday, to try again and BINGO! Success with a nice 40 minute tie. Another successful breeding on Friday and that's that. So, with breedings on April 23 and 24, we expect pups on/about June 25th....IF she's pregnant. Now to wait 28 days to ultrasound.
